Fact number one... us puppies will generally eat anything - we can't help it, we just love food (and your shoelaces, and the welcome mat, etc.).

Homemade dog food recipes made to order.

It's fun to experiment with different flavors (yes - contrary to popular belief we DO have preferred tastes).

As long as you include a solid, quality source of protein, we'll be much healthier than if we are kept on a commercial diet. But it's OK to add some commercial dog food into our diet, in fact we need the kibble to crunch on.

It's a proven fact that Veterinarians recommend that you change up what you feed your dog.

This is true no matter whether you choose a healthy homemade diet or a combination of dry dog food kibble and home made. Offering your dog a variety will help avoid...

  • Dog food allergies caused by build up over time.
  • Dog food boredom, which can lead to behavior problems.
  • Assurance that your dog is getting a balanced diet, and all the nutrients needed to stay healthy.

A healthy way to add some variety in your dog's diet is by simply adding some fresh fruits and vegetables ether with your dog's meal or as a special treat in between to keep up his energy.

Consulting an expert Veterinary Nutritionist is advised when you are first starting your dog on any new diet.

Start out with these simple to fix, homemade dog food recipes. With just a few ingredients found at most any local grocer, you can add and substitute with whatever is in season now.

Please note that all of our homemade dog food recipes take into consideration that your dog is already in reasonable health. And start slowly when you change up your dog's diet, mixing in the old diet with the new until your dog is completely weaned off the previous dog food.

Basic Homemade Diet For Dogs

  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 2 whole tomatoes, diced
  • 6 russet potatoes, cubed
  • 1 cup uncooked macaroni pasta
  • 2 cups uncooked brown rice
  • 2 1/2 cups water
  • 1 cup green beans, chopped
  • 1 cup carrots, chopped

In a large covered pot, or your slow cooker, combine all ingredients from ground beef to water.

Cover and cook just like a stew for 45 minutes over medium low heat - or in your slow cooker 5 hours on low.

Note: Check to see that there is ample water at regular intervals while cooking so that your doggie stew doesn't run dry. Add water a half a cup at a time as needed.

Uncover and add in chopped beans and carrots. Stir to mix well.

Cool and serve! Freeze unused portions in individual portion sized zip lock type bags.

Jasper's Favorite Homemade Dog Food Recipe (yum!)

  • 1 cup uncooked brown rice
  • 1/2 lb. boneless skinless salmon
  • 1 zucchini or green vegetable in season (see notes below in recipe)
  • 1/4 cup broccoli

Cook the rice in a rice cooker or as directed on the package. Allow about 40 minutes of cooking time for this part of the homemade dog food recipe, since brown rice tends to take longer to cook than white rice. Then, pre-heat your oven to 325º.

When oven is up to temperature, place the salmon in an oven proof baking dish and cover with foil. Bake for 25 minutes, or until a fork inserted comes out easily - does not stick.

Add the broccoli to the rice for the last 10 minutes of rice cooking time. Be sure to replace the lid! This will gently steam the broccoli, making it more palatable for your dog.

Grate the zucchini, or if you are using another dark green vegetable, chop it finely. Note: Jasper's favorite is zucchini, but he likes both asparagus and peas as a change up.

Mix everything together; cooked rice, steamed broccoli, baked salmon and raw vegetables.

Serve one portion of this favorite healthy home made dog food recipe, and freeze the remaining dog food in portions size zip lock type bags for future use.
